Las Vegas cemetery
LAS VEGAS, NV–A Las Vegas area doctor is leading the effort to develop the area’s first Muslim cemetery. There are around 18,000 Muslims in the region and no dedicated cemetery for the community, reports the Las Vegas Review Journal.
Dr. Osama Haikal is heading the push for a private not for private cemetery which will meet the needs of the community.
The Paradise Township Advisory Board and the Clark County Planning Commission have approved the plan with a few conditions: minor conditions on hours of operation (daytime only), landscaping (to be installed prior to opening), parking (at least 25 spaces) and total number of burial plots (no more than 1,200).
There has been some opposition to the plan from the neighbors and the backers of the project are making all efforts to address their concern, said Dr. Haikal. “There will be no signs out front or monuments on the grounds, and the roughly 1,200 square-foot funeral home will resemble a modest house surrounded by an expanse of grass.
“A person driving by, no one will ever figure out what it is,” he said.
