Pakistani-British boxing star Amir Khan needed to go all out with his wedding if he was to outdo even the engagement party. Following his engagement to Faryal Makhdoom in January 2012, they held a gala engagement party for 1,000 people at Reebok Stadium in Khan’s home town of Bolton, England. Well, go all out he did, as the 26-year-old Khan married Makhdoom, an American student, at the Waldorf Astoria in New York in early June. The couple’s big day was reported to have cost $1million, according to the New York Post.
The wedding was exclusively covered by Hello! Magazine. In interviews with the magazine Khan described himself as a “changed man.†He also joked, “I had to get in there and tie the knot quickly, before I got beaten up in too many fights and lose my looks.â€
Khan revealed to Hello! that the pair are ready to start a family, “I’ve lived the young life, I’ve done everything I’ve wanted to do. Now is the right time to settle down and start my own family.†He also stated clearly his new priorities. “I’ve got to look after Faryal, so I won’t be going out as much partying with my friends. I don’t want that any more – I want to do the family thing,†he told the magazine. “I think I’ll change as a person when I’m married and it’ll be a big plus for me, I’ll be able to be more focused on my job too.â€
The new Mrs. Khan is a 21-year-old political science student in New York. She also shared her joy with Hello! Magazine, saying, “I’m so happy to be with the man I love and to spend the rest of my life with him – it’s a new chapter in my life.†She also reflected on her big night on Twitter, “Mrs. Khan. Last night was like a dream, truly amazing. Thanks to everyone that participated, really meant a lot x Now ready for the UK wedding!!.â€
The couple are expected to have an even bigger wedding in Amir’s hometown of Bolton, with a reported 4,000 guests attending. Faryal reportedly will subsequently move to Bolton.
