Staying Cool: Modest Muslim Fashion for Hot Summer Days
by Ayesha Mushtaq
“How are you not dying in that?”
“Aren’t you sweating?”
“Just take it off, I’m sure God would understand!”
Dressing modestly is a very important part of a Muslim girl’s life. But during the hotter weather, this can be very tough, testing patience and faith.
Managing to look cute, while simultaneously trying to avoid getting a heat stroke can be a real struggle. I am by no means a fashion expert, but after years of facing this struggle, I have learned a couple tips and tricks to help get through the heat of the summer AND look trendy while doing it- yes, it is possible.
Here are some go-to tips for the summer
SAY NO TO JEANS
The number one thing I try to do is stay away from jeans as the material tends to be irritating. However, if you do prefer wearing them, wear loose jeans so they don’t stick to your legs along with the sweat. A pair of loose boyfriend or mom style jeans or even skinny jeans rolled up, paired with a loose shirt is one of my top favorite ways to do this!
STICK TO FLARE/PALAZZO PANTS
Palazzo pants are the easiest way to look put together AND be comfortable. They come in so many different styles, patterns, and colors, so you can really tailor any outfit to fit your style and taste. With so many different ways to pair them, you can create dozens of outfits with just one piece of clothing!
DRESSES AND SKIRTS
Just like the palazzo pants, skirts and dresses are the quickest and easiest way to look like you put effort into an outfit while not overheating due to their flowy style.
Additional tip: Pair them with sneakers to make yourself look extra trendy.
STAY AWAY FROM PASHMINA AND OTHER THICK MATERIAL SCARVES
For the hijabis out there, it is best to stick to wearing cotton hijabs. Pashmina scarves are great for the winter, but try to stay away from them during those hot summer days. My favorite type of scarves are the crinkle style ones because they are so versatile when it comes to styling them- but are also light to keep you cool in the summer.
Style it with a bandana or hijab cap, sitting loosely around your face.
