Arab-American Soony Saad was the most recent Gatorade National High School Boys Soccer Player of the Year. And now Saad has taken his talents to Ann Arbor to play for the University of Michigan Men’s Soccer Team. One might have expected an adjustment period for the freshman striker. But Saad is no shrinking violet. He has taken the team, and college soccer, by storm, and leads the team in a variety of statistical categories.
Saad leads the Wolverines with six goals scored. He has done so in seven games, on a team-leading 53 shots, with 16 of those shots having gone on goal. That means he has scored six goals on 16 shots on goal, thus with him scoring on almost 50 per cent of his shots on goal.
Currently the team has three wins, one loss, and three ties. They are trying to return to the playoffs for the first time since 2008. In that year the squad mad the Sweet 16. The team has an interesting mix of youthful scorers up front and in the midfield, and veteran defenders and goalkeepers in the back.
Another of the team’s youthful scorers is Soony’s brother, sophomore midfielder Hamoody Saad. Hamoody was one of the team’s top three scorers last season. And so far this year he has two goals in six games, on 24 shots.
This is a big year for University of Michigan soccer, as they inaugurated their brand new stadium just last week. And the Saad brothers are making sure that big things will be happening inside the stadium on the pitch as well.
