Fundraiser for Crescent Academy International

Canton–May 19–Formally it is known as the Muslim Community of the Western Suburbs (MCWS), but most of us call it the Canton Mosque on Palmer road. This past weekend the Canton mosque held a very interesting and successful fundraiser for its school, the Crescent Academy International (CAI).

Approximately 1,000 people attended the affair, which attracted Muslims from all across Michigan.

CAI is a Montessori-style school with, according to its website, 350 students, PK through 8th grade, described on its website as “a private, college preparatory, Islamic school enrolling students in Montessori preschool up to 8th grade.”

All teachers at the school are certified, most with advanced academic training.

The school first opened in September of 1991, and claims steady growth and progress since then, claiming a reputation as “one of the premiere Islamic schools in North America.”

The school was opened by the Michigan Education Council (MEC).

The ethnicities represented at the school reflect those of the American Muslim community, with a slightly larger than proportional representation from the peoples of the subcontinent which in fact reflects the demographics of Canton itself.

According to the website private schools report, the school is 34% from the subcontinent, 7.3% from African American background, and 58% white (which percentage may include many Arabs and people from the subcontinent.).

According to “www.crescentacademy.org,” on March 1st, CAI students and staff stepped into a newly expanded facility, the culmination of years of planning and hard work. The plant is 60,000 sf, a $7 million facility with 32 large new classrooms and a designated library, computer lab, art room, foreign language room, multi-purpose rooms, teachers’ lounges, and a new administrative area.

The entire facility also has internet access, and is of course fully climate-controlled.
