New Mosque Opens: IONA
Ameer Mustapha Elturk presided over a grand opening of a new mosque in Warren Michigan, IONA. Many community leaders were present for the event, and with several hundred members of the Michigan Muslim community welcomed a new mosque to the family of Muslim and Arab institutions in Michigan.
Genesee Academy End of Year Program, 2007

Genesee Academy the islamic Full time School of Flint, Mi put on there annual End of the Year program on Sunday May 20, 2007. The Program was held at the Carmen Ainsworth Hich School Auditorium. The Theme of this years program was brotherhood. the remarkable quality about Genesee Academy is that it has students from a variety of backgrounds and ethnic groups.
Some of the highlights of this years Program was a spinoof of American Idol- Muslim Idol which was performed by the Eight grade class. Also the 5th and 6th grade boys performed a wonderful skit, where the 6th grade boys performed the Arabic Debke dance and the 5th grade boys performed the Punjabi- Bhangra dance popular in Indai and Pakistan. the dance told a story of 2 families the Abdullah’s (the Debke dance) and the khans (Bhangra dance) who engaging in a rivalry. But upon hearing the message given by the prophet (peace be upon him) about brotherhood, embraced each other as Muslim brothers.
Other performances included a rendition of Stomp performed by the 4th graders, Lean on Me sung by the 5th grade class, We are All One Family was sung and also performed in sign language by the cute pre-schoolers, funny and innovative commercials were performed by the 7 th grade class, an a number of songs highlighting Islamic values, brotherhood and unity were sung by the kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gradersthe kindergarten graduation and the Eight grade Graduation and
The major highlight of the program was a performance by nationally acclaimed Muslim comedian Azhar Usman, who made the crowd laugh endlessly to his jokes about Muslims and their behaviors and the profiling of Muslims..
Iram Mohiuddin, Genesee Academy’s new, young and energetic principal gave an enlightening State of the School address, highlighting her desire to make students love their school so that they will want to come to school.
“Arab American Professional of the Year†Awardees
Dearborn–May 24–The Arab American Professionals Network honored Jim Zogby as “Arab American Professional of the Year†for 2007.
The AAPN selected the best from four industries: medicine, entrepreneurship, finance, and law. The AAPN recognizes successful Arab American professionals in the Detroit area that serve as mentors and role models for young Arab Americans. Their banquet congratulated their awardees and supported their continued success. The program for the evening was “Celebrating Success.â€
The evening’s keynote address was delivered by Mr. John Zogby, President and CEO of Zogby International, a world renowned polling research institution. He has been praised as the “the most accurate pollster†(Seattle Post- Intelligencer, Cleveland Plain Dealer, USA Today). Zogby International has been tracking public opinion since 1984 in North America, Latin America, the Middle East, Asia, and Europe. Mr. Zogby has been featured and a guest of news publications all over the world, including CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, Al Jazeera, BBC, and more.
