Musings—Mujeddid
By Imam Abdullah Bey El-Amin
In our religion it is said that every 100 years or so a Reviver of the religion will appear to pump new life into the religion. He will also come to explain and show the correct way and method to worship the Almighty Creator of all creation.
It is also written that every people will have a messenger sent to them; not a prophet, because Prophet Muhammad ibn Abdullah (the Prayers and Peace be on him), is the last and universal prophet. ALLAH, (highly glorified is He) sent Prophet Muhammad not only to the ignorant unlettered people of Arabia, he was designated as a Messenger to the entire world. He started in Arabia and his work spread worldwide. Even today Prophet Muhammad is recognized as the most influential person in the history of mankind. There will be no more prophets ever and no more scripture ever, so says ALLAH.
But a Mujeddid is another story. Imam Warith Deen Mohammed, who recently passed from this earthly life on September 9, 2008, was/is the fulfillment of that role as the Mujeddid for our times. The Mujeddid will bring to a people (in their own language) the pure, plain, basic, and simple scripture as revealed by ALLAH to the prophets. These Revivers will not bring or subscribe to any particular school of thought or philosophy particular to that people, or any other people. He will only bring (repeat) that which the Prophets of ALLAH brought to the people. And that message is ALLAH is One and Adam (mankind) has an original nature that places him above all creation.
This original nature is our fitra or also known as Christ Consciousness. Christ being described in the gospels as being able to “walk on water,†“raise†the dead, and be “raised†from the dead himself. Of course we must understand this is symbolic language having higher meanings: but it is also significant that the Christ’s ministry lasted 33 years and so did the ministry of Mujeddid Warith Deen Mohammed. (1975-2008)
If you want to see Christ, don’t look back there 2000 years ago for a man with blood-stained clothes and spike holes in his hands and feet. Look to the spirituality of the “water†of human moral consciousness. That is what Isa ibn Maryam brought. That is also what Muhammad brought. And that is what The Mujeddid repeated.
It is no secret that Imam Mohammed was a reviver of religion. He stopped calling himself Mujeddid because, I think, he thought it was too much for us to handle. He also changed his name to Warith Deen Muhammad, which means Inheritor of the religion of Muhammad. He stopped using that also (I believe for the same reason) and started using just W. Deen Mohammed.
Now that he is physically dead, there are those who would take his words and pretend they are the authors of it. But they never owned up to those words while the imam was physically alive. They are also those who claim to have had private conversations with him and he supposedly told them things that he told no one else. And they want us to follow them in what Mohammed allegedly told them. (Sort of like the “hadiths†of W. Deen Mohammed. “I heard the imam say such and such or so and so ….)
Imam Mohammed was a simple man. He did not care for the fine trappings of life such as gold, silver, limousines and the like. He used to drive a small Volkswagen and lived in a simple house on a modest street.
They used to talk about Prophet Muhammad’s (s) simple lifestyle as well. In Sura 25:7-10, ALLAH says; 7) “And they say: “what sort of messenger is this, who eats food, and walks through the streets? Why has not an angel been sent down to him to give admonition with him? 8) Or why has not a treasure been bestowed on him, or why has he (not) a garden for enjoyment?†The wicked say: “Ye follow none but one who is bewitched.†9) See what kinds of comparisons they make for thee! But they have gone astray, and never will they be able to find a way.
