Dr. Nuran Nabi elected Plainsboro Councilman

PLAINSBORO, NJ–Dr. Nuran Nabi, a former scientist,has been reelected the councilman in the Plainsboro Township Council of NJ, USA. Voters in Plainsboro overwhelmingly elected Dr. Nuran Nabi with 70% vote to the Council. Last year Dr. Nabi was appointed by the Township Council to fill a vacant seat and he was seeking reelection on last Tuesday’s national election.

Dr.Nabi holds a Ph.D in biochemistry from Kyushu University in Japan and did post-doctoral research at New York University Medical Center.

He is married to Dr.Zeemat Nabi and is the father of two sons Mushfik and Adnan.

Toastmaster honors Dr. Amjad Hussain

TOLEDO, OH–Dr. Amjad Hussain, a retired surgeon, newspaper columnist,  and a member of the University of Toledo Board of Trustees, has been selected by Toastmasters International to receive one of about 80 Communication and Leadership Awards that it is presenting throughout the world this fall.

He is being recognized as an author, speaker, and community leader.

Dr. Hussain retired from clinical practice about five years ago after a career as a thoracic and cardiovascular surgeon based at St. Charles Mercy Hospital.

He was a volunteer faculty member for 33 years in the former Medical College of Ohio’s department of surgery and holds the title of professor emeritus of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery at the UT college of medicine.

For more than 30 years, Dr. Hussain annually returned to Pakistan to teach at Khyber Medical College, of which he is a 1962 graduate. He’s also served as a visiting professor in China, India, Libya, and the United States.

In the past, Dr. Hussain has been president of the Islamic Center of Greater Toledo, the Toledo Surgical Society, and the Academy of Medicine of Toledo and Lucas County.

In addition to his Toledo Blade columns, Dr. Hussain has written eight books on topics that include religion, history, and culture.

Kingston city OKs mosque

KINGSTON, NY–Kingston city’s Planning Board has unanimously approved plans of a Muslim group to build a mosque at the site of a funeral home which was destroyed by fire last year.

Members of the Muslim Association of Ulster County were given unanimous approval by the Planning Board to construct the new mosque at 15 Downs St.
The group already owns a mosque at 7 Downs St., but it does not look like a house of worship.

City Planner Suzanne Cahill said that the approval was given with particular conditions including getting a use variance from the city’s Zoning Board of Appeals.
The mosque is planned for a spot that is zoned for commercial use, Cahill said. An application has been submitted for that zoning variance, Cahill said.

Nasir Khan, appointed CDO of Ports America

ISELIN, NJ–Ports America has appointed Nasir Khan as its new chief development officer.

Khan will be responsible for leading the company’s future investments and expansion in marine terminals.

Prior to joining Ports America, Khan served as director of infrastructure and energy finance at Citigroup, New York, where he led that company’s financing of transportation sector projects in the Americas. During his time with Citigroup, he also served as the director and regional head of IEF in its Sydney, Australia, office.

Khan will be based in Iselin, N.J., and report to president and CEO Stephen Edwards.

Riaz Khan, Prof.of Management

LOWELL, MA–M. Riaz Khan is a professor of management in the department of Manufacturing/Management Information Systems Group, at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell.  Professor Khan has been a member of the Advisory Board of the Lowell Small Business Assistance Center and has provided consulting services to a variety of business organizations and educational institutions.  He also has served as the Director of the College of Management’s Small Business Institute which offered assistance to the business community in the Merrimack Valley region and outside. 

Professor Khan is frequently invited to speak on television and at public forums and educational institutions on a variety of topics ranging from social justice to geo-politics.  He has regularly published articles in non-academic journals with international circulations aimed at improving race relations and understanding within and across various segments of society. 

Prior to joining UML, Professor Khan was on the faculty of University of Maryland.  He has also taught at Clark University and Boston University, and has been a visiting professor in Venezuela, Germany, England and Scotland. 

Professor Khan earned his B.S. and M.S. from the University of Karachi, and M.A., M.B.A. and Ph.D degrees from the State University of New York at Buffalo.
