Michigan Muslims Volunteer to Serve on Christmas Day

CIOM Press Release

US Rep. Keith Ellison attends kick off

(WARREN, MI 12/21/2010) — Last year the Council of Islamic Organizations of Michigan (CIOM) and the Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) joined hands across metro-Detroit for community wide service projects: A day to help Christian neighbors celebrate their Holiday by doing the volunteer work Christian volunteers would normally do.

On Saturday, December 25th Muslim volunteers gathered at Neighborhood City Hall

7744 West Vernor Hwy, Detroit, MI 48209, to provide meals for seniors and toys to needy neighborhood kids. This year Christmas falls on Jewish Sabbath so Muslims filled in to provide services.
The weekend is part of CIOM’s greater commitment to service in Michigan and its support for interfaith reconciliation. American Muslims continues to participate in interfaith and community service projects all around the country as part of Islamic values that inspire us to serve humanity, and is meant to highlight the contributions the Muslim community provided and continues to provide to build relationships and serve.

Some of the volunteer agencies CIOM volunteers helped are through Bridging Communities, Detroit Meals on Wheels, West Oakland Meals on Wheels and Jimmy’s Kids.
