Muslim, Jewish student join for halal & kosher meals
SAN DIEGO,CA—Muslim and Jewish students at University of California at San Diego joined hands to make the university’s dining hall receptive to their needs. Their year-long efforts bore fruit this month when the dining services announced that a dining hall at the Thurgood Marshall College would begin serving the meals in 2016.
Zev Hurwitz, executive vice president of Union of Jewish Students, told the Union-Tribune San Diego newspaper that the partnership between the two groups has really worked out well. “This project really has been able to bring Jewish and Muslims together to work for a common goal,” he said.
A release from the Union of Jewish Students on Monday quoted Muslim Student Association President Sammay Azhand as praising the collaborative effort.
“A lot of work has been put in to this initiative and it’s wonderful to see the progress that has come from it,” Azhand said. “None of this would have been possible without the collaboration and dedication put forth by our two organizations.”
UCSD will become the first campus in the UC system to offer a joint halal and kosher dining hall.
