Addressing Meet The Press at a local restaurant, the Houston-Chapter officials of the American Federation of Muslims of Indian Origin (AFMI) informed that about 500 attendees will be here in Houston on Saturday – August 25th – 2007 for the 17th Annual Convention of AFMI. The officials included Sharique Khan, Secretary of AFMI Houston-Chapter and Naseer Alam, Convention Event Chair. They added that every year, AFMI organizes two Conventions: One in North America & One in India.
It was informed that AFMI is a philanthropic charity organization founded by American Muslims from India in the year 1989. AFMI strives to improve the socio-economic status of the underprivileged Indian Minorities through education. AFMI is organizing their 17th North American Annual Convention at Marriott Westchase Hotel located along Briar Park at Westheimer in the Westchase District of Houston on Saturday – August 25th, 2007. The theme of the event is: “Educational & Economic Parity: A Must For A Resurgent Indiaâ€. Aim of the Convention is to bring people to one platform and that is imparting education to less affluent people of India, especially the minorities like Muslims. People will learn about the various projects of AFMI and will able to become positive entities of those programs, like CLAPS (A Computer Literacy & Awareness Program, which has grown from just 10 students to now about 80 in just few months).
Special Educational Seminars and Sessions will be held during day time starting at 10:00AM. on August 25th – 2007, while at night 8:00PM., the Main Program with Gala Dinner. The theme of the day-time seminars will be: “Promoting Education & Sustaining Development for Global Affluence.†This way people will get appraised as to why it is very important for the Global Prosperity that more of the world population is well-educated.
Chief Justice (Retired) Dr. Rajinder Sachar, Chairperson for Prime Minister’s High Level Committee For Preparation of Report on the Social Economic and Educational Status of the Muslim Community in India & Kader Khan, a noted philanthropist / social worker / veteran cine artist are confirmed notable personalities coming from India. Also various dignitaries of Houston, like the Mayor, Congresspersons & City Councilpersons and various others from North America including Canada are lined-up to grace this convention.
Registration for the Convention is only $50 per person. Children 10 to 18 years old get in for $15 Per Person. Baby-Sitting and Parking is Free.
