Ahmed Bile Named Male Athlete of the Year
FAIRFAX,VA–Annandale High School cross country runner Ahmed Bile was named Male Athlete of the Year 2011 by the Fairfax Times. Bile joins the young group of Americans of Somali origin who are winning top laurels at atheletic events around the nation.
According to the Fairfax Time Bile’s career took off in his junior year when he won Northern Region and Virginia state cross country titles. In 2011 he won the mile at the Northern Region tournament, 800-meter race, 4×400 meter relay and mile at regionals. He also won the Northern Region and state titles. He then went on to the Footlocker Cross Country National Championships where he placed 12th in the nation.
Coach David O’Hara is all praise for Bile. “There has never been an athlete at Annandale like Ahmed and there won’t be for another 50 years,†he said in an interview to the newspaper.
Bile heads to Georgetown University this year. Abdi Bile, Ahmed’s father and 1987 1,500-meter world champion runner, must be really proud of his son’s accomplishments.
